water dog

i picked up a water dog from a local bait shop for $1.99 to see if my puffer would eat it. its about 5" long an still has the external gils but goes to the surface for air as well.

after an hour in the puffer tank without being eaten, i decided to move it to my 125g tank instead. the 125g tank has danios, convicts- 1.5" and bigger cichlids- but none big enuff to eat the water dog.

if it eats the danios i dont mind, but will it be trying to take chunks out of other more valuable fish tonite while they try to sleep?

its quite timid right now, just wondering if it will get aggressive when the lights go out.

Yes, I would be concerned about it eating the fish. They have been known to eat guppies and feader goldfish. I don't see what would stop them from eating anything else that they could get in their mouth.

The other worry is that the fish will nip at its external gills. They are a likely target for the cichlids...

How cruel. Why would you try to feed a baby salamander to a pufer? You do realize that a Water Dog is a juvenile Tiger Salamander right? Anyway, it will probably try to go after the danios but will more than likely fail since the Danios are too quick. Anyway hope this helps.

his fate at my house is much better than if anybody else at the bait shop had bought him. a fisherman at work explained how you run the hook thru its chest and use a rubber band to keep its head inline with the leader. kinda creeped me out. here the puff will either put him out of his misery in one bite, or it will salamanderize itself into an empty 10g i have around.

Here's some info on your waterdog if you'd like to take a look. I think I'd be worried about it eating anything in your tank that's small enough to fit in it's mouth.

I wish we had bait shops around here that carried anything like that. All the local shops carry are minnow, shrimp (they call them grass shrimp), and eels...

Yeah no kidding, bait shops here dont have them either, but the pet store sells them for like $15 it seems like. (The local one, not he Pet Depot that is like 10 min from the house) If i saw one for $2 i would probably get it and re-setup my salamander tank i had. I miss my california newt...
