I just picked up an Aquaclear 110 tonight at Petsmart for a new 55g tank we're getting this week. When I got it home and opened the box I found water in the bottom of the filter tank. The sponge and carbon filter elements are wet. There is a slight mildue smell.

It appears I got a return. Should I be worried? Should I take it back?

Thanks!

Take it back right away and do not consider using it. They(Petsmart) are supposed to send it back to the manufacturer for refund not resell it. Sounds like something they would do. Tell them when you return it that that is the way you recieved it;wet, so they do not accuse you of doing this. Then either demand a refund(that is what I would do) or exchange it for another one. Make sure the replacement has been factory sealed and has not been opened.

Thanks. I will do just that.

Are the boxes supposed to be wrapped in plastic or have some other type of seal from the factory?

Wrapped in plastic.

It will have plasic wrap on it but you can pretty much tell if it is factory sealed or a do-it yourself job by the store. Also all of the media in the box shoud be factory sealed as well. And if they give you a problem ask to see the management. If you still have a problem tell them you want the name ,number, adress, and e-mail of the corporate offices. My guess is they will just take it back.

I didn't have any problem with the exchange for a sealed filter.

They had 1 more that also appeared to be a return. It was not sealed and the items inside were just tossed in the box. I told the manager about that one too.
