how much water really is in a tank when full? let's say you have a 55G with gravel and decor in the tank, you probably have only about 50 gallons of water in the tank. your thoughts?

I usually assume my tank has around 45-48 gallons of water in it. It is a 55g tank. I also have some large ships for decor.

I guess to really find out, youd have to
1) fill your tank with ONLY water, measuring as you go to see the total actual capacity
2) add the gravel, decor, etc and catch the water it displaces
3) measure displaced water and subtract from the result from step one.

Or maybe thats my backassward, too much work way of doing things!

OR....

you could put all the decor in the tank, then use a bucket..lets say 5 gallons, and just keep track of how many you have to put in. Seems a little easier this way....

see, I told you I make too much work for myself!!! LOL

this is almost exactly what my husband says to me everytime I get an idea. And yes, its always hilarious...
