Water Lettuce - pics

Nice pics Rask! I bought some of that from LFS several months ago and I immediately felt like it completed my tank. And one of my African Dwarf Frogs loves to swim up to it and just hang on the surface within the plants with his feet dangling down. It's so cute. LFS did warn me that the plant can grow really out of control in the right conditions, but I just distribute the spoils into the other tanks, or trash. I love it! And thanks for naming it, I had no idea what it was called.
Take care,
Mary.

Ras,

Why don't you start a "Show Your Plants" thread and we'll ask OG to make it a sticky for us? Your idea, I think your name should be on it as the thread starter.

I want water lettuce :)

Beautiful plants, and I love the roots on those! I bet my 'beaks would love them. My duckweed needs to be eradicated - it outcompeted my azolla in a hurry, then my red root floaters died off. Now the last of my frogbit is barely hanging on. **** duckweed :mad2:

I think water lettuce would do nicely as a surface cover for my 40BR.

my ADF's would love those, but I have a glass top on my tank....

Wouldn't they block the light for the other plants?

You have azolla? Where'd you get it? I can't find it and it's on the Federal banned list

It's called Salvinia and it not only looks nice and 'frames' the tank nicely. It is good refuge for fry. Gouramis (especially the tiny ones) love it for 'hiding' and for building bubble nests, and shrimp enjoy it occasionally as well.
But, to me the best thing it does is help balance the tank by using tons of nutrients and shading the tank when necessary. I wouldn't be without it.:)

There are many plants available on line, and in LFSs that are 'banned'. The ban is meant to keep the plant out of local fresh water lakes and ponds.
Use them judiciously in tank only and never release them in out door bodies of water. If you need to thin them, which Salvina needs OFTEN don't flush them down the toilet. Put them in the trash where they will dry out.

There are some states that don't permit the import of certain plants to, many of which are located in the south.

Len,
Thank you for clarifying that!

I've been unable to find Azolla anywhere, but I just got some Ambulia and was not happy to see that it was Federally "banned". Luckily it's not banned in VA, but it is in SC!

Learning more and more here every day, thanks to you and so many others.
