I finally have all my "loot", my tank is decorated (except for taping on the bg), and I am almost ready to actually fill the durn thing. One question, for which the rather "terse" Rena xp2 instructions had no answer...

Does the return spray bar go above or below the water level? I would think this is a pretty basic question, so I am suprised the instructions don't tell you...

Depends on the surface agitation you desire.

I have my XP2 spray bar under water.

Although I have an xp3 instead of the xp2, its the same thing really. I had my spraybar about 2" under the surface of the water, and the holes pointed slightly below horizontal. (so just slightly more towards the gravel than the surface) Today, I decided to tilt them up a bit, so that they're just barely above horizontal, to see if the extra surface agitation does anything. (even though, with the agitation my emperor 400 creates and the water change schedule I maintain, I don't think its a big deal to have it up or down) I personally have my aquarium in my bedroom, and having the spraybar above the water level is a bit loud for my taste.

I have spraybars in two of my tanks and I keep them under the surface of the water. It is much quieter that way.
