I've seen that many people have chosen to fill their tanks all the way to the top. Since I have an HOB, I've never done this; I always thought there should be room for the water flow. However, would it be all right to fill my tank over the lip of the HOB? TIA.

people usually do this so the when the water falls back into the tank from the HOB power filter, it doesn't create a splash and therefore less noise. i don't see any problems will filling it to the top, in fact thats what most people do anyways.

thats what I do for my HOB. Otherwise it makes a noise that at first is kind of relaxing but then gets annoying. It also reduces the current created in the water, bubbles, or other irritations.

I fill mine just slightly over the lip of the HOB filter. Mainly for the water flow so my plants gently sway. When the water just flows into the tank they tend to just go to one side or the other. Plus it is quieter. I haven't had any issues.

I think the issues are ridiculous. Fill to the level that results in appropriate surface agitation required, and live with it. :)

Fill mine about 1/4" above the trim.

Two reasons:

Keeps the "babbling brook" sound from the filters at a low roar,

Don't like the look of the water line at the top of the tank.

Don't think the fishies care. Still have about an inch of air under the glass lids, and the water is still being agitated for air exchange...

As long as there is enough surface aggitation on the surface of the water, this should not be a problem. I have mine pretty full and I have not had problems with it in more then eleven years.

I know we are all sensitive to certain issues or have pet peeves, just find it comical on how many folks keep aquaria and seem to be bothered by the sound of water flowing.

It is not the sound of the water so much as it is that I want to be able to relax in front of my aquariums which I find hard to do if the sound of water is obtrusive. A little water running is not a problem but when it gets to the point that it is annoying then it is time to fix the problem. Easy fix. Just fill it up. Besides,I listen to the sound of rushing water all day long at work from the ponds. At home it is time for peace and quiet.
