Water parameters

Yes, i would advise getting a strontium kit for sure, its not really worth the risk of not having one..Let us know what you choose to do with regards to buffering and bringing these param's back to where they should be...will be easily dealt with..

I'd also suggest dosing a two-part solution. If you're going to DIY the solution, the site you posted has some good prices on the chemicals you'd need.

Have you seen this article?

It talks more about a DIY two-part solution.

Do you have an auto top-off? Honestly, short of setting up dosing pumps (or dosing alkalinity buffer daily), mixing alkalinity buffer into my auto top-off reservoir has been the only way I've been able to keep the alkalinity in our tank consistently in the 10 dkh area. We do have a lot of coralline algae to go along with our numerous stoney corals. I manually dose calcium 2 - 3 times per week in order to keep calcium levels at or just above 400 ppm.

Otherwise, you might want to consider a phosphate reactor (or just using some phosphate removing media in a bag; Two Little Fishies brand is good) to bring that back down closer to zero. Since you know the source, that doesn't sound like a long term concern, so a phosphate reactor might be overkill.

No, but an auto top off is on our ever growing list of upgrades. I want it to keep the sump water level consistent for the skimmer. The group buy on the DIY (by the way we are doing this with the Atlanta Reef Club..you might ask the Columbia about it if you are interested) we are getting a mark down off the prices shown on the site.

I'm not sure if I want to do the DIY dosing or get one premixed. Obviously the DIY will be more economical but I'm not wild about a daily dosing plan and lots of storage room needed. I guess I had better add a fish room to my ever growing wish list huh?

And yes, I'm not concerned about the phosphates long term, I'm going to do a midweek water change and see if that doesn't help.

If you saw my reef log you saw my new porcelain crab. I actually went to this particular store to pick up a 2 part system the store owner (a coral specialist) is now a part owner of. I also picked up a new refractometer. Well actually a used one. The one he was using..lol. He sold me a great one for only $40 and it was already calibrated woohoo. It is easier to read than others I've used and thankfully I found out once home that my SG is 1.025 as I had thought originally.

So I'll try the 2 part for awhile and keep testing and I'll let you know what develops.

You know I just found this thread.. Excellent news Grins.. But I agree with what has been said as I saw the need to start buffering more when my coraline started taking off. But its good to see that things are looking better..
