Water question

Well, after noticing that my nitrites were hardly dropping, even after large back to back water changes, i decided to test the bottled spring water i use (my only other choice is my well water, which is VERY VERY Hard, smells of rotten eggs sometimes, and rusts my sinks immediatly). The test came out kinda orange, which means it has about .3 mg/l +. I then tested my well water and got 0mg/l.

My question is - will one of thoes filter and hose things (made for aquariums, about 60-70$) you can hook up to a sink, and says it takes all the bad stuff out of tap water, like heavy metals, work on my well water? Or am i better off getting tap water from somewhere else? (basically, will it lower the hardness of my well water)
 
Looks like a deionizer, basically a filter that strips ionic species from water, probably followed with some activated carbon. It should work fine. Do some shopping around for RO units too though and consider the cost of replacement cartriges. Sounds like your water might burn through those cartriges pretty quickly (more like 50g per cartridge than 150g), that could get pretty costly, especially with 50% weekly changes on, was it a 29g tank? So about 15g per week each cartridge would optimistically last you a couple months, pessimistically, one month.

On another note, you could also look at a larger scale purifier for your whole house. Might be a bigger initial investment, but it may pay for itself in terms of your enjoyment of tap water and cleaning rusty sinks. ;) Just a though of something to look into.
 
Only a 10 gallon, but yeah.. Ill look into ro units, but in the mean time ill just get tap water from somewhere else :p
