I’m going to put up a 30 or 55 gallon tankk. I have concerns about my water out of the tap. I know it is extremely hard and also has a little sulfur in it also, less than 1ppm.

My wife just bought the boys a goldfish to tide them over till I decide what I'm going to do. The gold fish tank (1 gallon desktop with a undergravel filter and air pump) has been setup for 2 days now and already stinks, kind of like a dead mouse. Is this the sulfur or just the gold fish?

Does any one have experince with similair water conditions. I have orderd a master test kit for my water and it has yet to arrive. So im not sure of any readings yet.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you're smelling the sulphur. I believe that if you were to put your water into a clean bucket (used only for fishtank water) and aerated it for 24hrs or so...most of the smell will be dissipated.

The more oxidized sulfur is the less it smells. Take one capful of household hydrogen peroxide (in the medicine chest in the upstairs bathroom, in the brown plastic bottle on the middle shelf, all the way to the side) but just one, and dribble it slowly where the filter outlet is.

The goldfish is already in the new aquarium. There are articles about cycling a new aquarium here at AC. Try the new Bio-Spira-- apparently this "cycling" product actually works.

Thanks for the advise, Im not too worried about the goldfish but but whole lot more worried about the 55 Im getting ready to setup. Hate to make the investment if Im going to have to fist fight my water to keep fish alive. Thanks again
