Hi , my cousin said he uses some kinda water softner resin he bought from LFS , it dosn t have any brand or anythin like that on it , the LFS just put some ( depends on ur tank size ! ) in a plastic bag and give it to u !
he sent me some , and as far as he s almost an irresponsible guy for fishes , he said just put it in ur filter and know nothin more bout that ...
so the questions are
1- is water softner really necessary for tank ? ( i kinda have hard water here )
2- how should i use it ?
3- can i use it with activated carbon and ceramic rings ?
4- how long should i use it ? is it somethin like expire date for it ?

I would not mess with the hardness of your water with additives unless you are planning to do it for an extended time period. Is there a reason that you want "softer" water? How hard is your water?

I have pretty hard water myself and It doesn't hurt my fish at all. Most fish you buy locally are most likely on the same supply as yours and have been adapted to a "standard" municipal type water supply.

i don have a special reason , and i don have a idea how hard my water s , i donno the LFS uses the main water source as we r or if they use resin, and the reason i asked s cuz once i bought some neons and all of them died before i even putem in the tank ( they died in QT ) and LFS said that s cuz of ur water and i should use softner , since then i forget bout it cuz my fishes are already healthy ,,, but i think the LFS usein the resin ,...

If your water is actually too hard for your fish, it is possible, you can reduce the hardness in the tank by using some RO water mixed with tap water when you do a water change. How much to mix depends on the water you are trying to bring down. In one of my breeding tanks that is 2 parts RO to 1 part tap. My tap water has about 350 ppm of TDS which is about a 20 GH. I wanted the water softer but not real soft so I shoot for about 8 GH. In other tanks it is straight tap water. You never need straight RO because that means no minerals for the fish. They will not be OK with that.

I'd be really surprised if your LFS uses any sort of softner resin in their freshwater tanks. I'd also be surprised if they check the hardness of your water when new fish die. I'd be more likely to believe your fish died of ammonia poisioning in a uncycled tank or just bad stock to begin with. If you want to use the resin why not ask the person you got it from how they use it? They have first hand experience. Here is some info on the Rena softner pillows ... http://www.animalworldnetwork.com/aqphfiwasopi.html

i said i think they may use it , i didn t say they sure use it , and they never tested my water for hardness , i bought some neons months ago and they all died and LFS said they need soft water and they said may be it s cuz of ur water s hard ... they didn t die cuz of ammonia i already had some fishes n my tank that i still have them ...
