Water Stinks

my tank smells, sometimes smells upmy room but i have a good air cleaner, i thought they were supposed to smell...

nope. an aquarium should have minimal smell. only time i had a bad smell from mine was when i didnt notice a rainbow was missing and when i rearranged the decor i found the decomposing body. after it was removed the smell stopped. oh and i never use carbon.
the only thing that smells now is the dog and me after a curry :silly:

On the topic of tanks stinking --- I notice the smell of mine often. I do a 25% water change once a week but maybe I should clean the sand at the bottom of my tank? I am not sure how to do this. I have a pretty big filter and do not see a lot of stuff on the bottom but could that be the problem? Any help is appreciated - I live in a small apartment and dont like to come home to a bad smell!

the pellets may be spoiled. . . try a different food and see what happens. generally either a tank stinks or it doesn't. i've never heard of the smell coming and going.

I have 3 angels, 8 black skirt tetras, and 2 botai loaches - does that make a difference? Maybe I should try new food?

I would add fresh carbon, watch the feeding, and do an extra water change.

its not likely to be the food -unless you are overfeeding and have either a bacterial bloom or uneaten food rotting in there.

fish tanks should only smell if you stick your nose into it and take a whiff.

otherwise you shouldn't really smell anything.

if you smell the tank when you walk into the room, something is wrong.

good luck
