Just bought my first 10 gallon freshwater tank with heater. We wanted something other than plain old goldfish. What temperature does the water have to be? Thanks,
Matt
goldfish are too big for a 10 gallon anyways so good decision. it really depends on the fish you want but as watcher stated 74-80 is where most fish end up. there are some other coldwater fish like whiteclouds that can fit in a 10 just fine and you shouldn't need a heater. they can also handle warmer temps just fine. killifish also need cooler water and actually wouldn't survive in most warmer tropical tanks. being that you are here and havn't made the mistake of hitting the local wal-mart/petsmart and buying a bunch of fish destined to die, you have an advantage on a lot of us. I'm sure a lot of people are like me and did the stupid method the first tank we had. fill it with too many incompatible fish, kill off all the beneficial bacteria once a month and kill all the fish. Stick the tank in the attic after it becomes too much hastle and 6 months later start the whole process over again. Before you rush into buying fish or anything, read, read, read. Read up on how to cycle a tank first and learn about the nitrogen cycle. you don't have to be a chemist to figure this out, just try and get firmiliar with it because it is the life or death of your fish. You can make fish keeping a lot of work by trying not to make it hard work. The more you ignore and refuse to do (water changes, cycling a tank, etc.) the more work it will become and you'll get upset. This is a very fun hobby if you just find out how to handle it and do it right. Go to your local fish stores and see what they have, find out what catches your eye and write down the names. then research the fish. There are lots of fish that look small and cute but turn into huge monsters in no time (oscars are perfect for this reputation), others may be small but deadly to others. Some just don't like eachother. Some need lots of friends to keep from being stressed out and dying. Once you find out what fish you want, find out how to set up your tank. Don't decorate the tank so you like it, make sure the fish like it. You wouldn't want some CEO for Arby's to come decorate your house would you? Oh, start saving money now for a new tank. it won't be long before you're craving more Kyle
