Ok I am new here so first off hello everyone, Now to my question. How can I maintain a 75-76 temp in my tank. Right now it goes from 76-77.8 and that is with the heater off. I am having issues with my heater, if I set it at 75 degrees and the tank is internally at 77 the heater turns on. Is there a good heater I can buy that is more accurate? My fish are gouramis(6) 1 dojo,1 farlowella,3 occotinulis (sp). In a 55 gallon tank.

what kind of heater do you have?

I think there was a post on AC within the last couple months on this stuff...you might want to do a search. You might also want to post in the DIY/equipment section of the forum, for more response.

I have heard good things about jagar, and I think I will be getting one soon. Like the ones in this link.

Even heaters that have temp numbers on them are rarely accurate. Rely instead on the thermostate built into the heater. It sounds like 77.8 is the highest temp (usually caused by having lights on all day). Just keep bumping up the temp on the heater untill it reads 78 (in the morning after lights have been out all night). When the lights start to heat up the tank the heater will shut itself off. I have to keep a 10g tank at 81 in order to avoid temp flucuations.

It doesn't sound like you have much to worry about. If the temp is a few degrees higher that is fine. Things are rarely precise in this hobby. Stable is the bigger key. I keep one of my community tanks at 80F as that is most stable. The other one stays near 78F as that is easily attained and most stable. The fish are all quite healthy.

ok I tried to adjust the heater, I got it to stay 77.7 when I got up in the morning. This number comes from the highest temp point when I get home and the lights have been on all day. So being I wake up and tank is stable overnight at 77.7 when I turn on the lights the heater turns off but the lights warm up the water so my temp increases to 78.5 is this ok. I would personally like to stay in the 77.7 temp area.

That is less than a degree of change. I wouldn't worry at all. I see 4-5 degree fluctuations in some of my tanks. There is no problem and you will stress yourself to death trying to keep a tank at such a specific range. As long as change sin temp are slow then don't worry.
