I purchased an API Master Kit and a Phosphate test kit and got some bad results.

Fist the good:
Amonia : 0
Nitrate: 20
Nitrite: 0
Hardness: 40

Now the bad:
Alkalinity: 300
pH: 8.4
Phosphate: 2.0

I was pretty sure my phosphate was going to be high because I have well water so I had already purchased a phosphate remover to add to my filter.

What do I need to do to get the pH and Alkalinity under control?

:help:

I have always been to you can put Peat Moss in your filter... that will lower the PH. I have also been told to never use extra Chemicals such as PH Down unless it was your last choice.

I know you can get Peat Moss at places like Home Depot.

Are your fish having a hard time with your water? If they are doing fine, I would not try to alter your ph. Peat can be used, but its a balancing act to figure out how to keep it consistent. If you are not having problems, I wouldn't change anything, just be extra careful when acclimating new fish.

Cherry Barbs, Blue Paradise, Rainbow Shark, Panda Cory, Tetras (i forget what they are named), ottos and SAE.

I recently tried to add a Dalmation molly to the tank, but it dies which is why I went to get the water test.

For my more sensitive fish, I also use half and half tap and RO. For things like mollies and endlers that tolerate and even prefer harder water, I use staright tap. My water from the tap is about 225 tds and from the RO is 20.

do i even want to know how much a RO unit will cost me?

you can get them for around $100 if you shop around.

or change the stock of fish ..tho many can adapt to the water you have.
you may want to consider some of the african cichlids.
depending on tank size of course.
