Water tested finally

It doesn't rub against anything, I tried fixing it many times. I'm getting rod of the filter all together and get a canister filter. I don't like buying carbon refills and they cost to much. My tank doesn't really need carbon in it anyway, what does carbon really do?

Dip strips are not reliable enough to call the results fine for now...

Bob, I was trying to error on the side of kindness rather than absolute perfectness. Maybe I shouldn't, but I try not to frustrate new people into stopping the hobby.

Carbon is not absolutely necessary when you have a pristine tank with no fish deaths. But, if there is a build up of any toxins in the water the carbon will safely eliminate some of it to keep your water cleaner. This can lead to saved fish lives as well as the tank looking aestetically more pleasing. If you are still having fish deaths and do not have an API Freshwater Test Kit yet, I would recommend keeping the carbon in place. Once everything gets established and there are no problems and you are doing water changes twice a week of 50% then you may not need it.

some of my fish are old, so if one dies, it's age not me. I had this tank for close to a year now and everything is just fine, in my old tank i did 50% water changes and my fish kept dying after the changes. The water I pu it was the right temp. My dad told me I don't have to do water changes due to the live plants I have in my tank.

It is t just matching the temperature... Were you treating the water you put in (if you don't dechlorinate the water that can kill fish)? How often were you doing them (if you do a 50% change but not very often it can be very shocking to the fish that have gotten used to living in that unchanged environment)? Water changes are good for fish. Plants will reduce nitrate but from what I hear it isn't enough to decide not to do water changes. Give this a read

And that is only ONE of the threads where numerous people gave her solid advice only to hear excuses and have it be ignored. She was also told to get a good liquid test kit and not strips, and yet what does she buy? This is why so many people have stopped helping her and just ignore her threads. She says she's no newbie and has put her fish through horrible conditions. I'd say that Rbishop was being very cordial for the situation.

I'm part time and I don't make a lot of money, most of my money goes towards food and other things I need. I can't do any water changes as of now cause I have a breeder net in my tank and I don't want to kill the guppy fry I have in it. My dad is going to take most of my fry and i am back down to 4 swordtails in my tank, I had 8, gave 4 to my dad. Strips are all I can buy on my salary. I had fish for more then 10 years, first fish was a betta, he lived in a gallon vase and I done weekly water changes on the vase. Where I used to live the water came from a stream and was harmless on the fish I use Aquasafe when I put more water in my tanks.

If your not going to be able to afford a liquid test kit try to find an LFS that will test your water with them. I've used liquid and strips, the strips are going to give you a false sense of security. No test at all would better than strips IMHO. Same for an LFS (most chains I've seen) that test your water with strips.

Water changes wont kill your fry. Not doing water changes, however, may kill all of your fish. I have a 20 gallon tank with about 50 guppy and swordtail fry in it and I change the water twice a week. Have never lost one. As for not being able to afford to buy a liquid kit, well you just spent $7 on useless strips. You were told they were a waste of money, yet instead of being responsible and saving for a good kit, you buy them anyways. And once a week isnt enough water changes for a betta in a vase that has no filtration. Lets see how you would do locked in a closet for a week in your own excrement and no way to shower. Not to mention you'd have to suck some of your potty in every time you ate. All I see are more and more excuses by someone who only wants attention and doesnt actually care about her fish.
