Water went bad: bass died

Since I ranted on that first post and didn't ask or say what I really wanted to when I hit the reply button...

Gambusia...

Did you do any tests on your water after your bass died? What were you feeding it and how big was it?

I'm sorry for you loss...

In North Carolina it is not illegal to keep gamefish you lawfully caught fishing within the regulations.

I didn't have a chance to do a water test. We've gotten slammed by Hurricane Frances and look to get hit again.

It was 8" and I fed it goldfish and fish pellets.

I too live in Virginia. Keeping native species is illegal. I dont agree with all of it, but it's the law around here. Sorry about the bass. By the way, what were you feeding it?

I wasn't aware of the specific laws in NC, sorry about that. As to chico's question to my reasoning behind having it removed from the forum its simply to protect the person posting. Theoretically a fish and wildlife officer could have read the post, and I am sure some do, and potentially send a fine in Gambusia's direction. I know here in Vermont keeping a native fish without permits carries a fine of $500 per fish for non game species and I believe its $1000 a fish for game species.

Oh yay, just read the NC details. Maybe if I get a larger tank I'll keep my catch when fishing next time =). But reallly, I don't get the logic behind not being able to keep native fish. It's not like they could damage the local ecosystem.

In MOST states if you can legally remove the fish from its habitat (eat it) you can legally keep it alive in a tank. I keep native fish exclusively. An 8" bass and two gar in a 75 does seem a bit overstocked to me though.

To Slappy: 2004 / 2009...whatever, the topic is still relevant. Especially in light of the recent HR 669 flap. (But I get your point...)

To Lolfish197: The thought behind a gov't ban on native or invasive fishkeeping is in the potential reintroduction of these captive fish into the public waterways. Suppose someone dumped their half dozen bass with ich or other parasites into your local stream. The potential contamination of other fish and who knows what else is the concern.

The thread 'topic' is about the OP's water going bad and his bass dying.
