I'm getting ready to build a new tank and I want a waterfall/River water feature. What would be the best way to do this, I have the basis on how to do the waterfall, and I'm assuming I would have the waterfall go into the river then into the pool of water. How would I get the "river" part, what is best to use? Would a false bottom help me get to my end goal the best?

My second question, what is good moss that will thrive in a Paludarium, my mother lives in the country and has tons of moss on rocks around her pond, is that safe for frogs or should I go with a different type of moss? Thanks!!!

Heya.

A false bottom will definitely help you out when it comes to a river feature... any water that splashes out will have a place to drain.

There is no best way to make a river... but there are certainly some good ones. In my opinion, using as much natural material as possible will yeild the most interesting results... My first paludarium had a large, partially hollow driftwood that acted as a waterfall and river, and it was really enjoyable. you can also use stones, foam, a variety of things, to create a suitable surface. the key to success is careful planning and SIMPLE executions.

in terms of moss, a lot of local mosses will do great in the paludarium... I'm in NYC, and have found that most mosses I've collected here (and ones from MA) have not done well. They are not tropical, and therefore need cooler nights, winters, and probably other conditions that I did not provide for them.

Most aquarium mosses will do great in a paludarium. Java moss is unkillable... but in my opinion is rather stringy and less than ideal. It really depends on where you want it to thrive, and how you want to use it, when it comes to choosing a moss. plan out a landscape or your choice of fauna first, and then decide which flora is appropriate.

If you don't want to DIY waterfall ( I have no clue how), Petsmart sells a waterfall that is not using a water pump.

I'll do the waterfall myself, I have a general idea on how to make one, just looking for some good idea's =)

im not sure if it would work out in your tank, but a disapearing river would be cool. the water would fall from the waterfall in to gravel and drain down into the false bottom. it may not be what your looking for but its a cool concept...

That isn't a bad idea at all, it gave me a lot more idea's to think of now.

I'm only a few days into testing, but I highly recommend cork bark, for how nice it is to work with and how cool it looks wet..

I agree. You can also pick up a hollow cork tube and cut it half to make a stream bed.

i used lace rock to creat what you see it's sold in just about every pet store but finding just the right pieces can be a challange
