Wavemaker and the need for something like this?

well, its up to personal opinion and preference.

but I guess it would help cut down on dead spots....

My fiancee uses one in her office reef tank and from what she tells me its definitely an improvement over regular powerhead timers (night and day only)

I have been reading into this and im most likely going to buy one.

I believe it would not cut down on dead spots as much as you would think... the "off time" is time when you are losing out on flow... Plus being turned on and off isn't the best for the power heads.

This is just me, but if I wanted any alternating water current... an SCWD, hydor rotationg water deflector, ocean's motion unit, a sea swirl(s), or possibly a tunze wavebox. The only time I would use a wavemaker that works by altering the pump out put... is when your using huge tunzes or vortechs, when you've got a lot of extra flow to throw around.

Not nessasary at all...
