Way to nuetralize tannins?

Hi all,

I've got a tank that is dominated by driftwood, and i'm experiancing a high tannin count. Water changes don't seem to effect it's removal at all. While it's fine front on (1FT and a bit), side on (3FT) you can definately see it.

Carbon doesn't seem to have an effect either.

Recommendations?

Water changes and carbon should make a difference.

Try taking out the driftwood and have it soaked by itself for a week or so, changing water everyday.

some types of wood take years for the tannins to leach out such that carbon and water changes will help.

IF the carbon isn't doing the job, it's getting loaded up too quickly. It may need to be changed a couple of times a week, or a higher volume of it used or both. Carbon is short lived even in a tank without obvious high levels of tannins or other contaminants. It is essentially a volume capable of handling a certain amount of chemical (In your case tannins) once full it quits working altogether.

Boil the driftwood for 20 minutes dump water repeat until water no longer turns yellow or brown.
