Aha...I shall have to pick one up.
From what I have read, the company went out of business 20+ years ago.

Seems that they tried using cheaper materials so they could try to compete as prices on competitors' equipment fell. Even then they couldn't compete, as their prices were still higher than the competition - and they had lost their quality advantage.

a great writing style for sure. Kudos on this one!

Heh, look what I found...
Silent Giant on e-Bay
Scroll down to the third pic.

Precisely how I intend to get one, thanks (shipping will likely be hell, as those pumps were filled with gravel). I collect vintage aquarium stuff, and have a number of pumps, but not a Silent Giant....yet.

Hi all, liked the memories of old style fish tanks,

If that sort of thing interests you, I would suggest "The Toy Fish, A History of the Aquarium Hobby in America" by Albert Klee and "The Ocean at Home: An Illustrated History of the Aquarium" by Bernd Brunner.

A friend of mine used to work at the fish department of Pier One Imports. It's been a loooooooooong time since they sold fish!

I had four tanks with box filters powered by one Silent Giant.

30 years later, the pump's still going. A nephew has it now....

I wonder if I can ask to get it back?
