As a recent bride
I have a little insight on this subject. No the registry is not just for girls & family. It is a good way to get something the couple really could use & you already know they will like it. Cash is always appreciated too. $200 seems a bit high to me. A couple of people gave us that much, I was quite suprised by their generosity. They were very good friends of my parents, I don't know them all that well. Mostly my friends gave off the registry, those that gave cash gave about $50. To me the idea of "covering the plate" where guests are expected to give a gift equvalent of what their meal costs is rediculous. The reception & entertainment was about $200 per person. Very few people gifted us that much, and I don't care. I was happy to recieve anything at all, and happier that all these people wanted to share in our day. At least half of the guests have told us or my parents that it was the best wedding they've ever been to.
My point, if there is on anywhere in my rambling, is give what feels appropriate based on what you can afford & how close you are to the couple. The Bride & Groom should be appreciatave of anything you may give them. BTW the registry info wasn't on the on the invite because that's considered poor ettiquite. That would be ASKING for a gift which is a no no in the sticky world of bridal ettiquite. You should be able to ask anyone in the family, bridal party, or the couple themselves. HTH,
