Hey. Was wondering. What do you use to weigh down plants? Some bunched plants come with what I assume are lead weight strips wrapped around the base..

I am new but isn't lead bad for living things? Like fish?

ANyone know/think it is ok to weight down plants with garbage bag ties? i think its an aluminum wire encased in a plastic mold.. i was thinking you could loosely wrap them around the base, of say, anachoris (sp?) and them stab the two ends into the soil to act as tethers...

as far as i know, lead isnt bad for fish. i have used lead and steel weights with fish and shrimp in my tank and not a problem. they banned lead fishing weights only because birds would eat them by accident... and lead hurts birds.

Lead has been used for many years in the fish trade and I have never heard of it being a problem for fish. Make sure you wash your hands after handling lead.

I just put them into the substrate at an angle and they root and stay down on their own. Sometimes it does take more than one attempt. Those band will cut off the bottom of the stems and they will never root on their own.

I doubt that the bands they come with our really lead so I imagine using them will not effect the overall health of the tank.
