is it normal for my pleco to jump out of the water a couple times a day

they do breach sometimes, it is normal and will happen more often as they get bigger. my boyfriend has a 125g tank about 6 feet long with a hinged glass top, and when they breach they hit the lid hard enough to make it open a bit.

It's common when they are spooked but more so (so i have read) with common plecs. My L numbers have never once jumped

my commons have never jumped, but they might just be too small for me to notice. one thing they do that it funny though, they lay on their backs to eat the flakes off the top of the water. lol. i try to put flakes in their mouth, but they move around too much.

Awesome! now that i wouold like to see! any pics of your plecs doing this???

no i dont, i wish. i should try to get a pic of it on my phone, since i dont have a digital. its only my 2 plecos(6-7 inches) in my 55 gal tank. i have 1 about the same size in my 20 gal, and he never does it. he just waits for the flakes to drop down to the ground. i didnt think it was that strange, i kinda thought they all did it, i guess i just have talented fish.

danielle - since your pleco has ick, he may be jumping so often to try and escape the itching from the parasite.

Yep one of mine is a pig, he knows when it is feeding time and he inverts and skims the top of the tank eating all the flake... He also will take the pellets and eat them ;)

Yup, My common plec is a foot long and he jumps at night. I think it happens when he gets surprised by another fish. He is a pig too. He will suck up a whole cube of bloodworms or whatever is offered.
