Hello everyone,

I can't figure out what this weird white spot is on my pleco. I've had it for about a year, and just within the last 3 months or so the spot (more white that yellow in reality) started forming. It started as a slightly lighter brown than the rest of him, and has slow become completely white. It's not fuzzy or anything, just looks almost bleached. It looks yellow in the picture, but it really is just white. Any other white spots on the photo are just particles in the water and aren't actually on the pleco.

The water quality is perfect and I change 30% every week.

Anybody have any ideas?

What tanks mates are with him. I know some plec's dont like there own kind and marks like yours appear on pleco's normally due to fights. Please let us know who lives with him might be a bully in the midst

Hi GER1023,

Thanks for the reply, I have only 1 pleco in my tank, 3 tetra's, and 4 Balloon Mollies. I never see any of the other fish near the pleco and they are usually afraid of him/her.

The only thing that might be a little different than a normal tank is there is a little bit of salt in it for the mollies (just the suggest 1 Tbsp per 5 Gallons). The specific type of tetra's I have also appreciate the salt.

The weird thing is the white spot, over 3 months, became whiter and whiter. Does fungas usually work this way? I can't think of what else it could be....and the pleco seems very healthy.

Thanks again,
M.

i would venture a guess that his skin could be absorbing some of the salt and his body is having a reaction.

40g: 8" pleco(plus more asorted fish)
38g: 7" pleco " "
26g: 6" pleco " "
10g: 1" pleco, 2"pleco, 4" pleco, breeding pair of mollies+fry

It's probably just in my head, but I did a 30% water change last night and I could have sworn this morning some of the colour was coming back. I'll give it a couple days and see how he looks.

I think I can find a happy medium for the mollies and the pleco. Next week I'm going to change another 30% of the water, and not put any salt in it and then it will be around 50% of the amount of the salt that was in it before. If the pleco and the mollies both seem okay with it, I will only add half of the amount of salt I used to add.

you're misunderstanding. Plecos cannot live in a tank with salt... any salt.

really? From a lot of the posts I've read on this board and others, some say plecos can deal with salt, some say they can't. Mine has for around a year, and I think the only reason that he's starting to show signs is that I recently increased it a bit.

I'm not talking a lot of salt or anything here. (maybe .5 tbsp per 5 gallons)
