The mulm is usually not suspended in the water column and therefor most of the time a non-issue. You will always have a certain amount present unless you go with a bare-bottom tank.

I have moss in ALOT of tanks and it does collect some gunk if its on the bottom. If it's floating it's not so bad, and in my shrimp tank it never gets dirty.
