Wet/dry filter overflowed, again!

or get a larger sump that will hold more water i use 30G sumps on all my tanks and never have had a flooded floor in 9 yrs.

Sorry to hear your problem. I used to run sumps and all kinds of stuff on my reef systems. I used to worry all the time especially when I was out of town. I had a few floods and I live 2nd floor condo :(No more wet drys and sumps for me and I don't worry about my tanks anymore :)
Good luck !

Thought I would add that when we looked further, we found that the fresh water return pipe has a leak at the plastic elbow. We are going to replace that and see what happens. Could that be a big part of the problem?

could that leak possibly be a siphon break?

That's what I was wondering! We went over everything with a fine tooth comb, and that is the only thing out of the ordinary. For now, we have the valve turned off on that particular overflow until we get the elbow fixed hopefully by the weekend.

well a siphon break is an intentional "leak", so if the power goes out, your return pipe doesn't siphon a bunch of water back into your sump...the hole lets air in and breaks the siphon to minimize the amount of water flowing back through the return line. Its a good thing to have.

IMO/E!!!!

Well if you look at nano55's return, you'll notice its 1/2 - 1" PVC running to the top of the overflow grate. I have the same corner flow system and our return line exits at the water's surface.

Power's goes out and the water drains slightly from the surface of the column...

Either the OP (nano55) keeps to much water in the sump(i.e. half filled/submersion over bio media), and the few gallons that may back siphon becomes an issue and really shouldn't be.

I have prolly 10 gallons of free space in my 15 gallon wet/dry sump.

Or the walls of the cornerflow have started leaking and the top grate does stop the overflow of water anymore... now the water is getting through a the level of the leak...

These are the only two reasons the OP's sump filled, and overflowed...

If our return line-loc was 4-5 inches under the surface, one might see a significant amount of siphoned water... Mine is just under, and my cornerflow drains lower than the tip of my return.

I drew a line with a sharpie on my sump, for instant visual water level. As long as I stay close to this line, my tank could drain until the overflow stops and the siphon breaks, and never overfill...

And I could be off base here too tho!

The top elbow above the water level??? With out a standpipe and a very full overflow chamber... Im having a hard time understanding how water is leaking through the elbow? The water level in your chamber is like half an inch?...

Is this the elbow you were thinking leaks??? I circled it in purple!

EDIT, a stand pipe in this situation, will equalize the pressure on the cornerflow walls. Less likely to leak after a reseal of the corner...
