wet dry filter/sumps

hey seaman which biowheel did you use? i was thinking of doing something like that before but with a series of wheels as the water cascades down the side of the fuge. i was thinking of using the wheels from the tidepool filter if they sell those or just setting up a bunch from water purifiers.

Would it be possible to construct a sump for use just as a refugium in addition to my existing sump, likely via a second overflow box off the main tank? I want to keep freshwater shrimp but all of my other tanks contain fish that would eat them.

If you can put the refugium at the same level as your current sump, just move the main-tank->sump line from the sump to the refugium and put a syphon hose between the sump and refugium. I'd say make the syphon big enough to handle at least twice the volume as the pump line. Then the water should flow main-tank -> refugium -> sump -> main-tank. I don't think it would reduce your flow rate, but I'm not positive. You'd also have to take precautions to prevent the shrimp being sucked up or harmed by the syphon intake.
