Wet Spot fish?

Sooner or later most folks come to regret not having used a Q tank. I am even more careful than dudley. For tank raised fish I Q for a month and for wild caught fish it is about 3 months. Those time periods mean that length of time without any issues. if I have to treat for something, the Q period starts anew if and when they are cured. I have a few clown loaches that I was given in 2002, I am not going to risk losing these guys because I failed to Q.

I went to the Wet Spot a few years ago on a driving vacation (awesome shop!) & brought home very healthy rare fish rather than have them shipped. Shipping cost is always a consideration when getting fish online. Is it an unusual species? Have you asked if your local shop can order them for you? Sometimes they have to order like 50+, so unless they think they can sell them they won't do it. There are even a few Petco etc. stores that "can" order fish, ask around & talk to someone who actually decides not just "the help".

Many online sellers insist on overnight shipping these days although I had "priority mail" fish a few times several years ago that was fine. Be aware of your & their temps, spring is a pretty safe time.
Nice! Well it's Nannacara anomala, impossible to find here and VERY FEW place have them online. I don't really know why. Anyway, my LFS can special order fish. I have a farlowella on order form them right now. I WONT got to my Petco anymore and I'll have to ask my PetSmart.

They have priority. I'm debating it because they only have a guarantee on over night.

I would but I don't have room in my house! I know I'm taking a risk but I just cant. :(
Thanks anyways.

QT is always best but sometimes...well, it just can't happen. Luckily TTA & I have room. I don't think I'd pay shipping on just 1 fish or even a pair AND risk my other fish...but it's a judgement call. How deep is your wallet & how bad do you really, really want them?...& without QT, how sad will you be if you bring home some uncureable plague or the expensive of drugs to treat some disease? What if you lose all your fish?

Maybe there's a similar species more readily available? I would suggest you get some more experience before getting your heart set on a rare or unusual species...& even then you'd be better off having a special tank just for them...think hard!

Believe me, i know it's best but I just cant. I only have one tank. I would never pay shipping for just one fish. Well, maybe is it was something really rare or something but you get the picture. I would be getting ~15 fish from them. If I was afraid of disease I would have never gotten in to fishkeeping and would never get anymore fish. It's just a risk I'm willing to take. I cant say 'I'm not going to get any more fish because what if they bring in a disease". You'll notice I italicized "what if". If anybody lived their life wondering 'what if' everybody would be scared to do anything. What if I have a heat attack today? There's a possibility of that but I'm not taking any heart medicine. Do you get my point? I'm sorry if I seemed preachy.

I've done my research on them. They aren't a 'hard' fish. They aren't a popular fish so they are 'rare'. They are even beginner friendly. I probably wont get them for a month or so I'll have time to think.

I like to see & try to choose my fish carefully, you don't get that with online sales except in very rare cases. I also like to see the health of fish kept with the 1s I want or on the same filtration system. Learning what healthy & sick fish look like is an important part of our hobby. Many new fish keepers give up after a major die off. That's understandable, it can be heartbreaking.

It's not so much paranoia as experience. I don't want to unnecessarily have the expense, worry or work involved with diseased fish. Some things are easily treated if caught early, some are not. I have a few fish I will not risk...& some I might for the right new fish...but I also almost always QT....that's sometimes the price of past experiences, & having lots of tanks for rare or unusual species.

Amaz, your new to AC, we have no way of knowing your level in our hobby, newb or world class breeder & there all the in betweens...(snarky comment deleted) Even before the internet (OMG!!) there were encyclopediae of fish we drooled over even if we hadn't much of a chance keeping them well...but we wanted to!

Good luck!

I do as well. That's why I'll check with my LFS first. I can tell a sick fish from a healthy one (I hope! lol) I've been lucky, I've never had a die off.

I've only ever had one tank. I've never qt'd anything. I mean, with all that's going around right now I'm not sure if I could even set up a qt tank. It's also expensive and a pain to cycle. Now if I had 3 tanks I would set up a qt but i don't.

True. At my old forum there was a place where you could put you experience. I forgot you didn't have it here. I'm what would you concider a casual hobbiest. I've had a tank for about, I dunno, maybe 6-8 years (that was horrifically stocked some of the time). I just recently (Sep19) 'really' got into fish. I upgraded my tank, learned how to cycle a tank (my old one had been set up for so long and I didn't know that I should cycle it back then so as a result I didn't learn) and learned of my stocking issues. I did do a 'proper' fish-in cycle (with the testing, water changes etc.) as I couldn't have two tanks running for ~6 weeks. Anyway, now I've had it running smoothly for 6 months, am stocked/planning to stock adaquitely and am just venturing into the exciting new world of breeding fish.

You don't need to cycle QT's. Just have cycled media or just QT with uncycled while doing daily WC.

Get your tank wiped once, shame on the fish. Get your tank wiped twice, shame on you, get a quarantine tank.

Got my tank wiped once, now I have a QT .

I forgot about that. Now I feel stupid.

Do you thank a 5-10 gal would be enough?

5 is sufficient enough. Bigger the better, some people go 40-60g for discus.
