What a mess.

Well the water is getting clearer. Now I can see there is something off gassing from the wood. Looks like about 1/8 of an inch of water displacement. No smell. I added a crypt and an anubias yesterday. They seem to be doing fine. I was expecting the cyrpt to melt but it is standing up taller this AM. We will have to see how long that lasts. Added very small amounts of ferts. The ph seems to remain stable, ie the same as the tap water.

Does anyone know where I could find some white sand?

And does anyone have any suggestions for a simple ground cover? (Think low light.)

You could use pool filter sand or play sand. However, it would probably be best to go with the former, as play sand is known for being really messy because of its fine particle size. What kind of lighting do you have?

Is pool sand white? I used to use only play sand for aquarium substrates. I did that for years.

It is just a normal fluorescent aquarium light. I think that is 10 watts.

I was thinking of doing some Sagittaria subulata.

Thanks for the links. I’ll have to see if I can find a little of that kind of sand. I only need a few pounds.

No it is not a compact florescent. It is just a normal tube. For me that is actually an upgrade. Everything in the tank right now will do fine with that light. I don’t intend to upgrade it. So I am looking for something to grow over the substrate that will grow in that light.

My thought right now is a to cover this little troublesome root in java moss and keep it pruned. Then try and blanket the substrate with another plant.

I think this isn’t going to work. I will give it some time to see but there is a real problem here. I just did a water change and holding the hose about 10 inches from a five gallon bucket. That resulted in about three inches of soapy bubbles on the top of the water. I am not sure why that would be. The ph seems to be dropping a bit. Though it cleared quite a bit the water remains hazy. I took the anubias out of the tank and washed it and put it in another tank for now.

Pine resin?

Why do you think it is pine resin? Have you used any soap around the tank or perhaps in the bucket you were using. Is it possible it got contaminated some how? What if anything have you done prior to this happening?

The comment about pine resin was just a question. No soap. I am careful about that.

Yesterday I added small amounts of ferts. Now the water has become very cloudy again. I just did an ammonia test and there are, it looks like, between .25 and .50 ppm. That makes me thing this is another bacterial bloom. The ph is a little lower now than the tap water.
