I doubt they took a loss. Even if they only broke even they'd see it as an investment, since you are supposed to replace them monthly.
Of course the first step to setting up any Penguin filter should be replacing the cartridges with something better/cheaper.

Everyone always talks about how much they like AquaClears because of the rinseable and reusable media...duh! I just use AC media in all my HOB filters. I do have carbon on hand for emergencies and polishing - that goes in a filter sock or pantyhose, once in a while.
the AC sponge's also make good DIY sponge filter material as well, you can make 3 nice sized ones out of one of the large sponge inserts.
2 hrs to figure this out? it was fixed and you got more then you paid for so no reason to be ticked. i would have been ticked if i spent 2 hrs on this issue tho lol
20 minutes seems like 2 hours to a youngster, lol
