I was at a LFS the other day and say they had a green severum. he was very nice looking. so now im thinking about maybe putting one in my tank. so I have some questions.

1. what kind of different severums are there. I know theres the green and the gold, than I hear about the heros severus(SP?:), what is this??

2. from what I see they get kind of large, I have a 55 gal, will it be big enough. by the time I would get a severum there would probably be an angelfish in there also, would there be a problem?

3. are they aggressive?? will they be ok with an angelfish, kisser, dwarf gourami, pleco, and eventually some apistos and maybe rams.

4. are they hardy, do they have any special requirements.

thanks.

There's also reds and rotkeils. I believe I have a rotkeil, but he's a big weenie and hid all the time in my office tank. I recently brought him home and he is doing much better in a tank with a couple of African cichlids, 2 blood parrots, pleco, catfish, clown loaches and xenopus frogs.

Sounds like your choice of tankmates is good. I have another sev in the show tank at work who lives with a variety of synodontis, bunch of silver dollars, raphael cats and the odd gourami or rainbow fish.
I think aggressiveness with this species is based on an individual account as a lot of them seem to be weenies, but this particular green in the show tank killed another gold sev and runs the tank.

If they tend to be weenies, they may not be hardy. Big Daddy, my rotkeil, is a weenie and he would always wig out and went through about 3 boughts of ich when I first got him. He used to hide all the time and wouldn't eat that much so he never really grew to full potential. I'm hoping since he's doing better in the home tank, that he will fill out. I think sevs can reach 10" easily. I rarely see them that big up here though.

my gold sevs hated each other they used to fight all the time until i was only left with one. i kept them in a tank with angelfish and rams with no problems towards these fish.

but they do get kind of large right?? will they get too big for my tank with the angelfish and the kisser?? its a 55-60 gal.

Two sevs should be fine in a 55g. They get quite large, up tp 8-10 inches. I have two blue sevs in my 55g. My "Heckle" is close to 8 inches. He was about 3 inches a year ago.

You will love sevs. They are very docile, but will acknowledge you're presence. I would love to pics of your ram, they are beauties.
