What affects growth rate?

Hello,
I have a dark parrot cichlid and a jack dempsey in a 55g tank (and a couple other fish). The dark parrot was dominent and all was well. Then one day, the jack dempsey became dominent as he is now slightly stronger. He terrorizes the dark parrot. I seperated the fish by putting the parrot in my spare 30g.

I plan to buy a 110 gallon in about a month. I would like to put the 2 fish together in the larger tank. What can I do to my parrot's tank to encourage growth (ie. water perams, food or anything) so they are a better match in the 110g?

feed more and more fequent water changes usually helps
