What am I doing?

It probably isn't harmful, but I am not sure that baby brine shrimp is the best food for RCS. I think they tend to be more herbivores.

Light doesn't matter to the shrimp, only to the plants. They do appreciate some cover like a cave or some floating plants though. Frogbit, water wisteria, water sprite, water lettuce... all of those that have descending roots like these will be appreciated... They also really like java moss or moss in general.

Verbal above me here is right that they tend to be herbivores, but they are scavengers, so they will eat what's available. Most fish foods are a mix of vegetable and animal matters.

Still have some females carrying eggs, some have hatched. Hard to figure how many..seem to be surviving after three or four days. Not having enough time to do a lot of research I need to keep asking dumb questions..it sounds as though I may be overfeeding, but so far no contamination in tank..snails are populating, though. With 20 young adults, 5-6 berried females, in 20 long..can I feed say four or five algae tabs and a couple pinches tropical flake per week? More? Do have babies, now.

It is very easy to overfeed shrimp since individually they eat so little. Feeding a tab every day or every other day is about right. If the shrimp are picking at stuff they are eating, even if it is too small to see.

Hey Jim,

If the sponges are in the tank, then I wouldn't replace them. Fry LOVE to hang out and pick them clean all day long. As far as the food goes, I just switched over to Omega One Veggie micro pellets. The shrimp absolutely love them, and you don't have to worry about over-feeding as much as other foods. I still supplement with a couple of other varieties, but the micro pellets are the bulk of their diet.

When the mommas are fanning, it is to keep water circulating over the eggs to keep them from developing a fungus.

Hope this has helped.

It all helps..basic to you is jewels of wisdom to me..like I forgot how beneficial any"sludge" could be to shrimp(esp. babies?). I almost automatically set the temp. too high, too.

Naw Jim,
I believe we are all here to learn so nothing should be considered basic. Yeah, I forgot to say something about your water temp. I keep mine at 75 degrees and the RCS seem to like it that way. I am new to shrimp as well. My RCS are berrying again, and this will be the 4th generation of fry. It took me a while (and a bunch of money) to find a food that they liked, and didn't wreak havoc on the tank. I will still drop in a flake or 2 of basic fish food. I also will give them a few frozen bloodworms on occasion. I also give them an invert pellet that they will eat, but don't go crazy for it now and then. I have about 25 shrimp now (only 4 adults), and I feed them about 1/2 an algae wafer's worth of food every other day. There is still plenty of algae in the tank, so I know they are not starving, and haven't had any loss.

I've seen some people say that ghost shrimp will prey and eat cherry shrimp..is that so? Also small crawfish would be bad in my cherry tank?

I think ghost shrimps are opportunistic. If they can catch a baby RCS, they will eat it. I've seen it in my shrimp tank. But no way can they eat an adult RCS. And I think it doesn't happen too often because my substrate right now is crawling with lots and lots of baby RCS.
