What are ghost shrimp really for?

I put them in my tanks as snacks for some of my fish. My loaches make quick work of them, but my Angels adopt them for a week or so before they go after them.

Depends on the fish. What do you have in the tank?

I'm going to state the obvious... they are no replacement for regular maintenance.

You should start out at 5 a week and see how long they last and replace as necessary.

well i do gravel vac, but you know how much that stupid thing misses... So the shrimp go back through it.

2 marble gourami
2 bala shark
2 dwarf gourami
2 yoyo loach
2 bristlenose pleco
2 amano shrimp
1-5 ghost shrimp

Two things,

Shrimp do not eat waste (poo) from other animals. Nothing can replace good tank maintenance.

Another point, I would not count on any shrimp (non aggressive shrimp species that is) lasting very long in your tank. You've got some fish that will quickly hunt down and eat any dwarf species you put in your community tank.

I'm not telling you to avoid them, but don't expect to have a thriving community. Any offspring that hatch will not lasts.

Get rid of the Bala Sharks, they will grow too big for your 30 gallon tank. The Yoyo loaches will eat the shrimp, no doubt about it. How long have you had the amano shrimp? I'm surprised they didn't get eaten already.
