Not a bad idea. I would go one step further and by them new media to swap with them.

I was able to travel over an hour with a used sponge with no bubbler. I just used tank water in a 5 gal bucket to keep it wet. Good luck.
 
livebearers and bettas work the best.
 
Sorry, but IMO bettas are NOT good for cycling. They have delicate fins that succumb to finrot in poor water quality, and they are also prone to popeye in tanks with toxic water. Both these conditions require medicating, which doesn't always work, and which can destroy the bacteria on your filter, which leads to re-cycling the tank all over again.
 
really? mine cycled my tank no prob.
