what are quarantine tanks?

Tank, heater, something for water motion. They are used as a place to put new/sick fish untill they are safe to go in the tank. This prevents other fish from becomeing ill.

In addition to the above it is usually a bare bottom with maybe a piece of PVC for the fish to hide in and feel secure. Minimal filtration and a piece of sponge that has been floated in the main tank/sump to provide biological media for the QT are all that are needed.

I have to disagree. A QT tank should be set up so that you can put any new fish you buy in it. That way if they are carrying ICH or anything else you can spot it and treat it before the whole tank has it.

true forgot to add that forgive me im medicated right now cause of my bad head cold lol:rolleyes:
although ive never used one and have barely lost any fish it just depends on where u get ur fish and how ur tanks run. but if u can set one up and have the space its an addition worth having. believe me i wasnt knocking them lol.

My yellow tang has been the only patient in my quarantine/hospital tank TWICE. Both times she was lying on the bottom of the tank and my crabs had started eating her fins and bits. 3 weeks in the QT tank and she was back to normal. I can safely say if it wasn't for my QT tank my Tang would be long gone!!

That was about a year ago that happened and she's still going strong.

I didn't think I needed a quarantine tank until the Great ICH outbreak of 2007. I bought a clownfish from a dealer who I later found out is notorious for having sick fish. All my fish got infected and I ended up losing a couple. My main tank now has Ich and I can't medicate it because of all my inverts. I would run fishless to get rid of the Ich if I could catch the fish who survived. So now my main tank has ICH and it probably always will just because I didn't get a QT tank right away. So, if I had been a little patient about setting up a QT tank, I wouldn't have ICH.

I also have the benefit of knowing that if I fish does get sick, I have a separate tank to put him in.

Try Ich Attack. I have used it in reefs in similar situations and it helps. Also add garlic extream to your food and keep your water at it's best. You should be alright in a month or so.

I don't even worry about it anymore. I haven't seen any spots on my fish in the past 2 months (had the problem in January). I try to keep my water as clean as I can, although I'm currently dealing with a nitrate problem which has led me to cut down on feeding and do more frequent water changes. From now on though, all new fish go in QT and I'm learning what fish stores to go to/not go to.
