What are sponge filters?

This is how I fill all of my Emporers:

I only buy new cartridges when they are on sale, Drs. F&S runs awesome sales on them a couple times a year. And with the way I arrange the filter media now the other filter media traps the dirt first, the cartridges don't get crummy like they used to. They barely need a rinsing now. There's not a lot of carbon in those cartridges and my water is always clear so I don't worry about the carbon getting old. Nitrifying bacteria will also grow on the carbon pieces and that's a good thing too. I think I'm down to only putting new cartridges in my filters every 6 months or longer.

debbi i just followed that link in your thread and thats a great idea thanks where do you get that micron pad? and your fluval sponges?

Drs. F&S! I bought Pure Flow Filter Pad 50 micron, a package 30" x 36" and cut it just a tiny bit smaller than the cartridge. That package is going to last me a couple of years.

i use sponge filters(nothing else) in 2/3 of my tanks. i just put a bag of carbon in the tank and let it lay on the gravel. they work great because they trap small particles that HOBs might miss. put the 2 together and your tank will be crystal clear 24/7!!!!!

this is my sponge filter..just be careful in fry tanks...;)
