...that a female guppie is already gravid(this is the correct term, right?) before you buy them at the store? My 2nd 10 gallon tank is almost finished cycling. The ammonia dissapated to 0, the nitrates are at 20 and the nitrites spiked to 2. As soon as the nitrites go to 0, I can get fish in there :) There are currently no fish in this tank. Anyway, I've got my heart set on having some guppies, and was just wondering if it's possible to purchase fish that are already pregnant. And, is the stomach supposed to look more rounded when they're in the family way?

9 times out of 10 a guppy will already be gravid when you buy them, most LFS mix the males and females. A 'pregnant' female will have an obvious black spot on its belly, the gravid spot, and will have (like you said) a full/round looking stomach.
 
I think it all but a certainty, since they keep them in water. :rolleyes:
