What are the largest fish for a 55g?

I cannot decide what I want to stick in my 55g. For the most part, I like smaller community fish. But I don't know much about larger ones.

What are the largest fish I can stick in there. They can be peacefl/aggressive (but please specify). Gar, Catfish, etc.

A group of Silver Dollars would be good in a 55,Firemouth Cichlids,Severums,Jewel cichlids,Assorted africans,I would try to hang around 6-8 inches,55s are a narrow tank...

They are narrow. I have a 55 and I keep smaller cichlids in the tank. They are aggressive and need over-crowding to reduce that, which means over-filtration. I would stick to cichlid species that max out at 4-5 inches. This way you can have a good handful of them. 10 or so. I know it is taboo to "over stock" but you need to with cichlids. Either do that or some silver dollars etc.

the word "overstock" has a completely different meaning when refering to cichlid tanks

some may disagree.. but I have kept africans for a while-- I overstock a bit, and overfilter a LOT and they live peacefully and even breed happily

What about some of the larger rainbows? I'm not sure of specific names, but some get 4-5 inches and are beautiful. I think they're mainly peaceful. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Why not some native fish? How about some Pumpkinseed? I love these. Or Warmouth.

yeah native fish can be cool... but getting them can be hard if your not in an area where fish collection is easy/legal

Melanotaenia lacustris, Melanotaenia bosemani, Melanotaenia trifasciata, Melanotaenia parkinsoni all stay around 4-5 inches.

What size fish can I keep in there with them?

Im definitely going to get a few inverts. Maybe some crabs/crawdads. I like shrimp too.

Something around the same size I would say. Obviously nothing that could potentially swallow them, or try to at least. Rainbows are pretty hardy but won't do well with really aggressive tank mates.
