Hello Guys,

Here are some fishes I have kept for a year but have no idea what they are. It would be great to know what they are, and what their general characteristics are. The fish in the first image is getting really big.

I keep them in a 35gallon tank with an underpowered eheim 2222 and a 1100lph powerhead with filter attached. The water is clear, but not crystal clear.

I don't know what those are but those are SWEET looking fish!

Hi there,

Im gonna have to do some digging around to find you the exact ID of these fish. Nice pictures, btw. Great for IDing the fish.

I can tell you for certian that the first one is a type of Haplochromis, a Malawi Cichlid. It is going to FOR SURE need a bigger tank. 55 gallons is absolute minimum but from its looks its gonna need something even larger. Im thinking it might even be a hybrid, although it looks familiar.

The second fish is not a lombardoi, or at least not a pure one. While the colors seem to indicate a male loosing its juvie coloration, the stripes do not resemble kenyi at all, and look more like a type of zebra. It could also be a hybrid.

Will get back to you..

my brother had the last one. It killed my my best fish. a five inch blue cray with such a nice shade it was almost purple.I spent 30 bucks on that thing and had him for about a year.

Fist 2 have the shape of a malawi eye bitter butt the color of a peckock

I'm thumbing through my Back to Nature Guide to Malawi Cichlids by Ad Konings (got to speak with him a few weeks ago when he gave a presentation to our cichlid club), and I'm thinking the big boy on top is a Mylochromis formosus (pg. 195)...the little guy on the bottom...I'm thinking a Metriaclima species or hybrid...

Look people (Kribs excluded) DO YOUR HOMEWORK before posting IDs on fish don't just hop around threads going OH I THINK ITS THAT! RESEARCH IT FIRST AND GET A POSITIVE ID BEFORE LETTING YOUR FINGERS WORK ON THAT KEYBOARD. You are helping nothing by giving out opinions without proper investigation into the matter. Most of you do not do that, don't bother posting unless you can back up your suggestions with some solid evidence.

Fish breeder, if you had a Cray in with them, or any other fish for that matter, its no wonder that happend, or vice versa and I don't feel bad for ya.

Now, Nurb, those are awesome pictures, like Kribs said, great for helping those of us who are willing to do a little investigation to ID them correctly.

The first one, while easily could be a hybrid, I think may be a
Dimidiochromis strigatus the blue color could be a number of things from lighting to food, or age, but all the other characteristics are quite similar.

The gill plate shape, white stripe along the dorsal fin, the red patch just behind the gill plates (yes yours has it, the blue drowns it out a bit, but you can see it in the first picture), the orange anal fin as well.

Here is a link to Malawi Mayhem about them. You will need a much larger tank for that species as with most Dimidiochromis species. http://www.malawimayhem.com/profile_show.php?id=74

The second one could very possibly be a Maylandia callainos as the link shows (the pearl morph),
http://www.israquarium.co.il/FishPhoto/Metriaclima callainos.jpg
However, it could also just as easily be a hybrid within the Maylandia family, in which case IDing it would prove nearly impossible unless it was a known hybrid.
