He is not sure on the second, smaller fish, but is still researching. During his trips and dives in Lake Malawi, he has seen several undescribed species that take a while to name - he is thinking possibly a cyanotilapia species, but not willing to commit to that yet. I'll keep you posted if he finds out.

Hello!

I think your friend may be right. It looks like it may be a Female Cyanotilapia Afra. A few things make a C. Afra distinguishable including the eyes, the slope of the head and most importantly the teeth. One of the common names for the C. Afra is the Dogtooth Cichlid because of the type of teeth it has. The tooth type is called unicuspid or single point. See if you can get a close-up photo of it's mouth and perhaps post it here.

Here's a link with some good clear photos of C. Afra:

Here's another profile with one image showing the teeth:

Look people (Kribs excluded) DO YOUR HOMEWORK before posting IDs on fish don't just hop around threads going OH I THINK ITS THAT! RESEARCH IT FIRST AND GET A POSITIVE ID BEFORE LETTING YOUR FINGERS WORK ON THAT KEYBOARD.

The first one, while easily could be a hybrid, I think may be a
Dimidiochromis strigatus the blue color could be a number of things from lighting to food, or age, but all the other characteristics are quite similar.

Its a Nimbochromis Fuscotaeniatus, with no research. ;) Look at the head shape more. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1156

2nd is a hybrid likely.
