well, i scored a 29 gallon tank off craigslist. the filter it came with was an aquatech 5-20 power filter. i did'nt care for it as it looked really underpowered so i bought an eheim 2042 filter that pumps 200 gph. its great. it came with two cartridges and two sponge blocks for biological filtration. since i am looking at ways to save money, i use the re-usable foam blocks in place of the cartridges, leaving some space empty for some sort of extra biological filtration media.
i have been perusing the different styles of media available on drfosters and marine depot respective websites and have been impressed with the wide variety! what would you recommend i use?
there are so many to pick from its boggling. what has been most successful to you?
thanks in advance!

If you want super cheap and super effective, head down to your local dollar store and pick up some plastic pot scrubbers. They usually come in packs of 6 and in 3 colors.

i have heard rave statements from users of pot scrubbers who claim it is the best media going, but im somwhat weary. im not too comfortable with pot srubbers as my friend added them to his tank and the water chemistry got totally fouled up.

i suppose i should mention that the media compartment in the filter is 1" wide, by about 3" long to around 6" deep. could i just make my own media, using like hardened clay that you can buy from like joann fabric or something?

Your friend might have got some with a chemical or cleaing agent. If your weary about them, buy a few and soak them for a day or two and note any changes. If you get some duds, your only out a buck.

The pot scrubbers are fine...as noted, get the ones that do not have cleaning agents in them. I also like the ceramic cylinders.
