Hey, I have a 40-gall with a mated pair of convicts and alot of fry in it and need to add something to clean the bottom. What are some good recommendations. I thought about puting in 12 or so ghost shrimp and see what happens, if anyone has any experience with this please help. :bowing:

Convicts will eat the shrimp and will eat snails. even larger species or crustaceans and mollusks the cichlids typically pick at them until they finally get them eaten. Cories would probably be OK with cons, but they are always risky with any fish that is predatory. if the cons do get a cory in their mouth, cories are pretty impossible to swallow or spit out, and it most likely will kill both fish. I'd go with pictus (in my tanks) or a syndontis of some kind. something in the 5-8 inch range that isn't too territorial to get along with cons.

Big plecos do fine as well

Pleco's do very well with most cichlids, however they aren't always the best bottom feeders, and the big ones don't do well in a 40 g tank. If you go the pleco route there are many that will fit the bill nicely, and I might add there are some pretty awesome pleco's out there to chose from. Just don't pick a pleco that will git bigger than about 10 inches.

I have 2 pair of paired cons and they are in bare bottom tanks so I can slightly over feed and then do water changes the next day. Just keep up with water changes with the fry you will have a lot of added wastes any way.The water changes will give the fry a better living area.

I have pictus with my cons and other large American Cichlids. I don't go with corys because they can pose a problem if someone can get them in its mouth. Plus, I've seen many corys loose dorsal fins and that isn't good for them. Nobody likes being constantly picked on and terrified.
