Um you'll be fine with 2-3. Two would be preferable. Off course you know enough to double the filtration and change water @50% weekly. You're getting really off the cuff answers to a simple question. Yes a 75g or a pond or a 500 gallon would be great but if all you have s a 36 that's fine too- just keep on top of weekly maintenance. And no you're not cruel keeping more than one- just taking more of a risk.
People will agree and people will disagree... if the advice I gave results in unhappy goldfish or an unhappy owner than my critics have more merit. She has a 36g and wants to keep a fancy or two in it- I'm not going to abolish the idea because 1) most of the goldfish bought at her lfs will end up in an obscenely small tank and 2) my friend owns an lfs and breeds goldfish on the side and has done so for years.
I don't think there's anything in ANY of my posts that promotes cruelty to fish or lacks common sense.
I have posted more than enough evidence in my first post in this thread to absolutely refute everything you have to say on keeping goldfish in such small quarters. It is painfully clear that you have never seen a properly cared for goldfish, because anyone who has, would balk/laugh/spit at the notion that a group can be properly kept in such insufficient quarters. We are talking about a fish that easily grows to the size of a softball under less than optimal care, and can outgrow a cantaloupe when given adequate housing. 75 gallons for 3 goldfish is ime, a BARE MINIMUM.
Ok, well my last post from a minute ago was deleted for being 'O/T and rude', so I apologize. But Inka, I would really appreciate it if you were a bit more polite. I feel like you are a little too opinionated, and it can get uncomfortable at times. If you are going to post in my threads, please be kind.

this is an open forum.. uo dont get to decide who posts in tupr threads
I do need to say that while you could TRY 2 goldfish in a 36g tank, it is highly likely that you will run into issues with water quality, ammonia levels, and possibly stunting your fish.
Personally, I'd feel 1 goldy could work pretty well, but would feel bad that the poor guy/gal was lonely. So I would wait until I got a 55g and get 2-3 goldies! I guess I've read too many incidences of people having difficulties when trying to fit too many gold fish into smaller tanks... and seeing how large even fancies can get - well, that truly is an eye opener!
