My film camera is a Nikon N65, which does a good job for tank pics.... and my digital is a cheap Kodak C300 EasyShare - 3.2 megapixals - but does pretty good ! For both, I'll either turn off the flash or deflect the flash upwards with a piece of paper....can get good effects both ways, without the flash ghost in the pic...i can also avoid the flash in the pic if I take a pic at an angle to the front glass of the tank....

Sony Cd Mavica, company issue. I am still partial to true photography (manual adjustment, SLR with film), but will reluctantly admit that there are many advantages to digital camera's. I haven't used a real Camera for several years despite my loyalties to the art of Photography.

I wonder how many film cameras are used as to digital these days? Not for professional use, but the average user - what is the ratio - film vs. digital?

I use a Canon S500 ELPH. This is my first digital and I like it for the most part. I'm still learning how to use it. My biggest complaint is the lag..I've missed many shots due to conserving battery life and the camera having to wake itself up before it'll work. I do like the fact that I don't have to wait to se my results and waste money on bad shots. I use this camera as my scuba camera as well and have saved a ton i film and developing costs. I figure out of every 24 shots ( 1 roll of film ) I get 8 or so keepers and maybe 1 or 2 really good shots. All in all I'm happy with this camera.

I imagine pretty low really, I bet you get find out by looking at film sales numbers over the last 20 years or so, and compare it to other trends in sales.

My daughter took photography class in college, and muc to my dismay they did most of their work with digitals. In reality, digitals are far superior for the general public, I just hate to see the art of Photography dissapear. There is so much that can be done with manual focus, extended exposure, double exposure and so on. We used to do overlapping night shots when I was in college, something that I doubt digitals would do very well. Additionally, There are things done in the dark room (leave that one alone Doll  ) that I'm not sure could be re-created to the same degree with a digital image

Actual "film developing" might become a rarity. I'd like to see Jay Leno do one of his "side walking" skits and ask random people, "When it comes to photography, what is a 'dark room' for?" (whiny voice and all...)

Dude! Do NOT buy from A&M Photo World!!! Scam artist company.

Let me tell you of my experience a few years ago.

I had decided I wanted a Nikon (thats all I can remember, I do remember it was like 8 MP and something like 8x zoom). I picked out the exact model and everything, it was like an $800 camera.

Well A&M Had it for half the price of anywhere else, and I thought "hot dog!".
So I call the company to inquire about it (Exactly WHAT I asked them I dont remember). But I basically just wanted to ask about it and make sure it had all the features I wanted.
Before I hung up, the guy tells me "Oh, for an extra $90 you can get a better battery and accessories like the lens cap, neck strap, etc". He said the battery was "Substandard" or something.

That kindof struck me as funny so I said OK and hung up.

This company was really making me mad because I know most cameras come with that stuff already in the box, and I thought they were taking the parts out.

So I call them back. First of all the guy answers like he doesnt even hear me "Huh? What? What was that?" This was all in the same day, and I am thinking "How many people call about a Nikon camera and inquire about the accessories per day?" Chances for that are slim. He acts like he doesnt remember me or something (It was VERY clear to me by the tone of his voice he was screwing with me). After his "huh"s and "what"s and me repeating myself a few times he finally says "What model number? What model number?". He says it really mean, and twice in a row, not giving me a chance to answer. So I tell him what model number and then ask about the accessories kit again and tell him I think they are taking the parts out of the camera and re-selling them.
After getting all nasty and calling me "punk" I finally just say "I am calling the Better Business Bureau" and hang up. Not before saying "Cancel my order" a couple times though (Before this last phone call I decided to just get it without the accessories kit).

So obviously this company has ticked me off.

I call Nikon HQ.

They agree with me 100%. They say ALL their cameras come with those accessories as a standard (A&M told me they dont come with those accessories). And that the company was definitely taking parts out.

So I ask them about the company, and see if they can shut their operation down or SOMETHING! But he said "I am sorry they are not registered with Nikon".

The guy from Nikon did tell me that he could do nothing but said I do need to submit a report to the BB. He also mentioned they do what is called "Grey market" Which is basically buying products not made in the USA, and with no warranty, and taking the parts out.

So I email the company again requesting they cancel my order, and thankfully they do (I thought I would have to call Discover and have them chace A&M down).

So I look into this company even more and it turns out this company is in a tiny building (It looks deserted, dust on windows, no lights on, no sign).

It also turns out they have a BIG history of doing this. They have done this same exact thing to many many people.

Just dont buy from A&M.

Now as for the cameras I used to use a APS camera, which I loved. A Kodak. Took very nice pictures and still does.
I now have a Minolta Dimage Z1 which has like a 12x zoom on it and 3.2 MP I really like it, the only problem is it really is too slow of speed for taking anything of moving objects.

You are right. But, a few things... Film produces clean photos, great for large frame prints. The lower the megapixels, the grainier, or noisy the photos look. Try and get a 5 megapixel or more and you will have 'less noisy' pictures.

Optical zoom is much more important than digital zoom. Digital zoom can add more unwanted grain, or noise to the photo. I keep my digital zoom turned off, unless I'm experimenting and most likely will not want to keep the picture.

The Olympus C8080WZ I have doesn't have much range on the optical zoom, but I bought it for the exceptional lens, great battery life, and wide range of settings. There are other cameras out there with a much better zoom range -- one brand has "purple fringing" which should be completely avoided.

Digital cams are fun --- and there's no film to waste!
