What Canister Filter Do you like

I have an XP-3 that I have been using for 5 years now and love it! I have no problems with it as far as noise is concerned, I love the filtration it gives me...

I have an xP3 and I'll admit it's not the most efficient best cleaning filtration device on the market but I don't understand how you come to the conclusion that the water flows around the filter media. The water flow goes down around the baskets and is then forced thru the filter baskets back to the aquarium. If the baskets are filled with filter material wall to wall, it seems it's bypass-free. Seeing your credentials in your signature, I'm defintely not one to argue with you. Help us understand why and how. Thanx.

Look at that diagram (the red bits specifically), then take an XP3 apart and look at the actual construction of those parts, and you will see how water can easily flow around the outside of the media baskets and back out of the filter without being forced through.

Personally I think that it has a decent design but it's manufactured as cheaply as possible in the name of profit. What that does for the consumer is give us a flimsy, frail, easily breakable filter that's only adequate at filtration. If the fit and finish were there, the ring around the lid and the top basket wouldn't leak and the filtration would probably double. Well if they lasted forever, someone would go out of business and we wouldn't want that on our conscience.

That is why you mod your canisters.

So they work better and last forever.

Take a fluval apart, im pretty sure you can think of a way to make it alot better. Thats why i like fluvals so much. You can pretty much customize it to your liking, with the type of media you want, and it is just a bucket with a powerhead in it. So only your imagination is limited in what to do with it.

But if you realy want a cheap, but good canister filter. Figure a way to make a sump-like filter, but closed in and pressurized to work like a canister.

I like to hear everyones comments -
Right now i am leaning towards the Cascade 1500 (because i have one already on another tank) or the Fluval 405 (the 303 has been a work horse for over 11 years in my current tank - few minor problems, like a failed valve causing 5/6 of the tank water on the floor and $1500 of hardwood damage :( but otherwise reliable - but hey they sent me two new valves).

FX5 looks the best so maybe i'll fork out the extra $150

I gotta recommend Eheim. AFAIK, they last pretty much forever (if you buy a new impellor and some O-rings every 10 years).

Tom Barr has said nice things about Via Aqua (aka Aqua Pro) filters (so I'd have a look if I were looking).

I have a fluval 305 on a 45gallon that was fairly over stocked untill yesturday, and i also pulled a 18year established UGF out and you couldnt even see a 6" bright yellow fish in my tank with the light on, withtin 20 minutes the tank was fairly clear, within 45 the tank looked like i hadnt touched it. Fluval hands down, and i love the customer service
