I have a 55g Mbuna tank, and I am switching from (2) HOB AC70 filters to a cannister filter(I can move the aquarium closer to the wall-since my kids keep getting stuff stuck behind it)- What size cannister filter is recommended? I was looking at a Rena xP3, but I didn't know if 350gph was too much?
Also, I am getting a 38g that I am going to set it up as a planted tank-would a Rena xP1 be ok?

lol, asking that question around here is dangerous.

Renas from what I've heard and read is a good one, dunno if the price is worth it though. Go with an XP3 if you want one.
Fluvals, a few like these, but most have had bad luck with them. Go with the 404 if you can find a good deal on em
Ehiem, good filter, stupid expensive though. 2217 classic filter. Expensive but might be worth it.
Marineland C Series, really really good filter, a C-160 kept my 29g crystal clear :D, for you a C-220 would be borderline, a C-360 would be better though.
Cascade, stay away from these filters, quality is far far less than the Fluvals.

well i would say that what cory keeper said is accurate. but for the plant tank i would go with some like the C-220 or Ehiem 2217 or the 2215. also check out ebay you can usually find really cheap filters there.

i did a lot of reading before i decided what canister i wanted. Alot of reviews i saw that were negative on products were the seals breaking and comming home to a now flooded pad. I suppose this happens here and there when the seals get old and should be replaced every year to two years.

I settled on an eheim 2217 after debating to get the ecco series. The ecco series eheims have an easy hand pump to prime the filter. Personally, not to big a deal, to prime the 2217 i got i just sucked on the output hose until water rushed into the canister and came out the other end, not too hard. The classic series is known for being a workhorse, simple to use, reliable, indestructable.

Fluval and rena are both supposed to be excellent brands and i suppose i just chose german engineering in the end. I can honestly say that so far, i am very impressed witht eh quality of the 2217 its practically dead silent, i mean the fan on my light is like 10 times louder. Overfiltration isnt always bad, u need to keep in mind that decor will slow the current in the tank, impeller will get clogged over time and needs cleaning, in the intrum itll still work well, head height, how fast it can pump it back out. Many of us overfilter our tanks.

Side note:
I paid 150 or so for my canister at fosters and smith. I also bought all my stuff from them, light fixture, filter, bulbs, eco-complete and some air pump stuff that i almost wish i hadnt bought.

me i have never had a problem with my fluval 405 infact thats whats on my 55 gal. they work great the only things is when they say silent they do have a noice, its like a noisy hob sound, if its in your stand you cant realy hear it

I hated my fluval 404's, but I think they worked better after their new owner did some maintance on them.

I have a Rena XP3. It is on my 120 gallon. I plan on getting a few more.
