I have black backgrounds on all my tanks. But, I've been looking at a couple photos of planted tanks with white backgrounds. Not something I think I would do but, they look pretty sharp.
Black and Blue are what I see in aquariums.(freshwater anyway)Reefs to fake rock walls for marine tanks.
I've got white walls so that's what I'm using at the moment,
with plants and rocks.
It looks great.
Sorry guy and dolls! Black and Blue is out dated!!!!!!!!!!!!Lol
I want black, my husband wants a seascape...my current ploy is to grow out the live plants enough it won't matter if we never get a "real" background .
I like black.
But blue is nice too..........
Some people say I'm indecisive. But I don't know about that.
:frog:
I sure do like frogs though!!!
And most of my backgrounds are black.
The only problem with a black background is black fish dont stand out. I go with as dark as blue as I can, and all fish seem to stand out with that color.

I'm going to be different/difficult(?) - I don't like black! Too dark and unnatural for the fish. Blue is even worse; blue colouring on fish is beautiful but can't be seen against one of those icky aquarium store blue backgrounds.
I prefer the natural landscaped look, e.g. A rocky or planted background - depending on the types of fish/landscapes you like. Lighter colours tend to work better for making the tank look sunny and vibrant.
I find that planted/rocky backgrounds can look good attached to the wall a couple of inches behind the aquarium, rather than to the tank itself, as this gives the appearance of additional depth.
