What color background on discus breeder tank?

White so the black doesn't attract the fry to the wrong place. Long time ago I read not to keep anything dark in the tank....the parents darken with the slime coat to feed them...but little new buggers that they are, some go towards anything dark. Good luck to you!!! Keep us posted....WITH pics!!!:grinyes:

I will do it in white, the back, and probably two sides as well.

I'll post some pix when its completed

Thanks everyone!

For me, covering up the sides (I just used white paper) helped a lot to make my discus feel really safe and comfortable. Can't wait to see the tank!

With pigeon bloods a dark tank will cause them to pepper more than usual - they try to match the tank setting. If you lighten the tank back ground and substrate you will see a dramatic difference in the peppering. I had the blue pigeon bloods in a darker tank and they all were peppered - I was pretty unhappy about it. Got to reading, switched my dark substrate in for light colored pool filter sand and the peppering just about went away. Also - if you breed a pigeon blood w/a non-pigeon blood the fry may be peppered. Pigeon bloods have had their stripes bred out (actually they are just dispersed into the background of the fish - hence peppering in some) and if they mate w/a striped blood line the peppering can be pretty heavy. I had blue turquoise and blue pigeon bloods and wanted to mix and match them - after reading about it I kept the breeders in the same line.

Go light and nothing dark in the breeder tank or the babies may not attach to parents. Good luck - they are awesome fish.
