Hello all:

Just curious, but what makes a fish cost what it does? A zebra danio can be $0.69, a neon can be $1.49, and a cory can be $3.49, etc....

What factors contribute to the price of a fish? Difficulty in breeding/raising? Shipping from far parts of the world? Combination? Other factors?

I know it isn't size, since a neon can be smaller than a zebra danio and cost more.

Thanks!

my guess would be mortality rate has something to do with it. Fish that are hard to keep alive in the shipping process are probably more expensive b/c half of them are dead by the time they get to the store and that money has to be recovered somewhere. I'm sure some of the LFS workers on here know for sure

Yes they all bear on the cost of fish as well as custom fees and enviromental issues like hurricanes in Florida where many common fish are farmed. The tsunami in the far east wiped out many fish farms too. Also factored in are the costs of running a store ie rent ,insurance, utilities and employees-Anne

Everything mentioned so far is on the supply side. Demand also matters. People are willing to spend more on fish they like, which probably drives up the cost of loaches, cories, etc.

Allot of what it has to do with it is greed, You want to talk about fish prices, 2.49 for a danio, the same or so for neons, corys are almost 5 bucks,
The only good thing that comes out of this LFS, is white cloud fry 1.99 a dozon.........
She is trying to get rich qiuck and is going about the other way around,
she don;t care about this store or she would have people working up here other then her little 13 year old girl, and a bunch of nit wit brains teen girls that have about as much smarts as a box of bandaids.
She has the best fish kill rate of any store I have seen yet, ever other week the oscars are dead, ick through out the tanks, and she just plain don;t care.

I just wanted to add that the United States sells fish for outrageous prices. Heres what I mean:

A neon tetra sold here is commonly found for 1.50. Remember, that is only one. I went to China and found 100 neon tetras for 10 Chinese dollars. Which equals $1.11 in the United States. Meaning, you could get 100 neon tetras in China for the price of one here.

LOL, just wanted to add that.
